Day 332

This apple shrub photo was the last image I made in our old kitchen. Old kitchen. It has a nice ring to it. This weekend we ripped it all out. The horrible kitchen is officially gone. It’s been the thorn in my side about this house. You may be asking why we bought the house when we hated the kitchen so much?

That’s why. I fell in love with the back yard. The patio. The pool. I didn’t grow up with anything like this. It is my dream backyard. We spend a lot of our time in the kitchen and outside so I’m thrilled to get started on this renovation. To have the kitchen feel as good as our yard will be heaven.


We have only lived in this house for a little over a year so we were only in this house for four months while we were drinking. We have been here more time sober than not. That feels good. We are making sober memories instead of wasted ones.

Our backyard screams drinks by the pool. That sort of got us in trouble our first year in Arizona. When I worked a flexible schedule and Iz worked on central time. He was done by 3pm and I was waiting with cocktails. Early happy hour happened nearly every day at 3pm and ended around 9pm. When we went dry September 1st we had to find a 3pm happy hour replacement drink.

Fizzy water is a great cocktail replacement. A hit of flavor, a refreshing fizz, and no downsides other than it’s expensive when someone in the house has a 4 can a day habit. I’m not naming names, but let’s just say his name starts with I.

Have you had shrub? I had no idea this was a thing! One day I was digging around instagram for mocktail ideas and someone mentioned shrub. I was immediately intrigued by this thing. Which immediately made Iz nervous considering the great Kombucha catastrophe of 2015. We still don’t talk about it so don’t ask. :::Shudder:::

The search has been on for something great and I finally found it. This is so easy to make! And believe me if it’s a recipe and me going head to head the recipe always wins. Which is funny since I have been know to create recipes for people writing books! Yes, my recipes are in a cookbook. Real life. Published and everything.


1 cup fruit chopped (any fruit will do)
1 cub sugar
1 cup apple cider vinegar

Mix your chopped fruit and sugar in a bowl and keep in the fridge for 24 hours. It will get all syrupy and the fruit will naturally flavor your sugar. It’s so good but don’t eat a whole spoonful of it. Not that I would have done that. Nope, not me.

After 24 hours strain your fruit and sugar mixture. I like to press on the fruit at the end to get all of the good juicy bits out. Pour in your vinegar and stir until the sugar is dissolved. It’s okay if it’s not totally dissolved it will be by the time it’s ready.

I let mine sit in the fridge for a week to let the vinegar mellow out a bit.

After a week mix your shrub with fizzy water. 1 part shrub to 3 parts fizzy water.

  1. I love how you have more non drinking ‘time’ in your new home than drinking. The pool area sounds amazing (sorry I can’t see the pics for some reason) but your description sounds like a beautiful oasis.
